Planning and Installation

What Should Be Considered for Verandas and Conservatories?

Roofing and glazing surfaces must be planned together with the supporting structure, profiles, seals and fastening systems. Polycarbonate expands and contracts with temperature changes and therefore requires sufficient allowance for movement. For roof surfaces, pitch, drainage as well as wind and snow loads must also be taken into account.

  • Determine wind and snow loads as well as spans for the specific project.
  • Allow for the thermal expansion of polycarbonate sheets.
  • Use suitable profiles, seals and fastening systems.
  • Plan the roof pitch and controlled water drainage.
  • Consider ventilation, condensation and summer heat gain.
  • Check local building, safety and, where applicable, energy-efficiency requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ About LEXAN™ Film & Sheet for Verandas and Conservatories

Which LEXAN™ Film & Sheet Product Is Suitable for a Patio Cover or Veranda?

For transparent outdoor applications permanently exposed to weather conditions, a UV-protected product grade specifically designed for this purpose, such as LEXAN™ EXELL™-D, is particularly suitable. Specific suitability must be assessed based on the construction, sheet thickness and technical product data.

Can LEXAN™ Film & Sheet Be Used for a Conservatory?

Suitable product grades can be used for transparent surfaces in conservatory structures. For heated conservatories, however, additional requirements regarding thermal insulation, condensation, ventilation and the energy efficiency of the complete system must be taken into account.

What Sheet Thickness Is Required for a Veranda or Patio Cover?

The required thickness depends on factors including sheet dimensions, span, supporting structure, roof pitch, wind and snow loads and fastening, and must therefore be determined for the specific project.

Why Must Thermal Expansion Be Considered During Installation?

Polycarbonate changes dimensions as temperatures fluctuate. Profiles, drill holes, joints and fasteners must therefore provide sufficient allowance for movement without compromising secure sealing and fastening.

Is LEXAN™ Film & Sheet Also Suitable for Side Glazing?

Yes. Depending on the product grade and construction, LEXAN™ Film & Sheet products can also be used for transparent side panels, wind protection and sheltered glazing areas.
